Bandsaw Safety Rules

1)  Wait patiently and do not distract the person who is using the machine.

At this point the students should review the general lab rules pertaining to the band saw which are as follows:

a) Operate only with instructors permission and after you have received proper instruction and have been tested.

b) Remove jewelry, eliminate loose clothing and confine long hair.

c) Use eye protection

d) Check the stock for any debris (i.e. Staples, nails or anything else that should not be there)

 

2)  When you step into the safety zone, concentrate on the machine.

 

3)  Adjust the blade guide to a pencil width (maximum) above the piece of stock.

At this point the students should:

a) Make sure all guards are in place and operating properly.

b) Make sure the blade is positioned properly between the support blocks. Remember: a sharp blade is a safe blade.

c) Make sure you have a push stick handy at all times.

 

4)  When you turn the machine on wait until the machine is at full speed (3-5 seconds).

 

5)  Don’t cut in the line of the blade, if you must use a push stick.

6)  Do not cut within the two inch margin of safety, if you must use a push stick.

 

7)  When cutting sharp curves use relief cuts.

 

8)  Turn off the machine and wait until the blade stops completely.
